He had formerly held positions as Chairman of the Transitional Military Council and General Inspector of the Sudanese Armed Forces. He ultimately took power, however, with a coup d'état in October of 2021, which he used to depose Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, dissolve the Sovereignty Council, and reconstitute its membership, with himself as chairman.
He joined the Sudanese Military College among the 31st batch before participating in the fighting fronts in the Darfur War and Second Sudanese Civil War as part of the Sudanese Army. After receiving further training in Egypt and Jordan, he was appointed commander of the army's ground forces.
Since the year 2000, he has identified as a member of the National Congress Party. He follows the Sunni Islam religion, which is the largest branch of Islam and practiced by over 90% of the world's Muslim population.
He was born in the northern Sudan village of Gandatu, to a Sufi family. It is believed he has at least 1 wife; however, her name was not immediately made known to the public. He has 3 children.
In 2019, he made his first international trip as President to meet with President Abdel Fattah El-sisi in Egypt. Later that year, he met with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, to discuss the future of the Non-Aligned Movement over the upcoming 3 years.
