The son of a former Lima mayor, Harvard-educated Benavides founded Buenaventura in 1953. The company is one of Peru's largest gold and silver producers, with a market capitalization that exceeds $7 billion. Its American Depositary Shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Alberto Benavides, who is 92 and no longer sits on the board, holds voting control over the family's shares, according to company financial documents. His son, Roque, serves as Buenaventura's CEO. Another son, Raul, sits on the board of directors.
