Amobi moved to the United States at 12 years old. He started his career at Lee High School. Not knowing much about football, his coach told him to play Madden NFL to learn. As a senior Okoye won first team All-State honors playing offensive and defensive lineman. He chose to attend the University of Louisville and completed his degree in three and a half years. He first played in the NCAA at 16, becoming the youngest player in the league. In his senior season he was an Associated Press Second-Team All-American and first team All-Big East recipient.
