Best known as the Writer of the popular Inspector Montalbano series of crime novels, he has also worked as a theatrical and television Director.
After training at Italy's Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica, he began directing plays by Samuel Beckett and Luigi Pirandello.
His numerous literary honors include the Nino Martoglio International Book Award, the RBA International Prize for Crime Writing, and the Crime Writers' Association's International Dagger Award.
He was born and raised in Porto Empedocle, Sicily, Italy.
His Inspector Montalbano books were adapted into a popular television series featuring actor Luca Zingaretti.
