On 5 December 2017, Ames was found dead, approximately 20 minutes from her home in Camarillo, California, at the age of 23. Her death was ruled a suicide due to asphyxia by hanging by the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office. Ames' brother, her close family, her friend, Jenna Jameson, and numerous media outlets stated that Ames committed suicide following what they described as cyberbullying. In addition to the claims that cyberbullying caused her death, close friends have spoken about her depression contributing to her suicide.
