The name SYML plays homage to his biological heritage, as it means "simple" in Welsh. He was born to a young Welsh couple but raised by adoptive parents since birth and only began to learn about his Welsh ancestry as an adult.
He married his wife Marrion Fennell in 2013, with whom he has one son and a daughter named Josephine. He was raised by adoptive parents with whom he shared a close relationship, and he wrote his album, "The Day My Father Died," about the struggle of losing his father to pancreatic cancer.
