Dada and New Objectivity Painter who became known for his post-World War I portraits of life in Berlin and Vienna.
He studied art in Munich before moving to Switzerland to escape military Service in World War I. He became a member of Dadaist circles while living in Zurich and Geneva.
His paintings were collected by the MOMA (New York), The Tate (London), and the the Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin).
His father, a German Lawyer, supported him financially for a large portion of his life. In his later life, Schad and his wife Marcella settled in Naples, Italy.
He and Max Beckmann were both German artists associated with the New Objectivity movement.
