Famous as the first Native American woman to become a United States federal judge, she served as both the U.S. District Attorney for Arizona and the U.S. District Judge for the U.S. District Court of Arizona.
After graduating from Arizona State University's Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, she established a legal practice in which she served as a senior litigator and a tribal liaison.
She served on both the Hopi Tribal Appellate Court and the U.S. Sentencing Commission's Native American Subcommittee.
The child of Mary and Donald Huetewa and the wife of Miguel Juarez, she holds Hopi tribal membership.
In early 2007, John McCain recommended that then-president George W. Bush nominate Humetewa for the position of U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona.
