Dieter von Holtzbrinck was born in Germany. With sister Monika Schoeller and half-brother Stefan, inherited publishing house, Verlagsgruppe Holtzbrinck, from their father George, who founded it as a book club in 1948. For 21 years ran the company, which owns book publisher Henry Holt and German newspaper Die Zeit. Retired in May 2001, turning over management of company to brother Stefan. Sold his share in business to siblings in 2006 and resigned from the supervisory board. His share was to be disbursed over 15-year period to prevent too large a cash drain on the company. Last March, acquired Handelsblatt, Germany's biggest financial newspaper, 50% of weekly newspaper Die Zeit and other assets from his siblings canceling previous deal and letting his siblings out of any financial obligation to pay him cash. Has formed a new company, Dieter von Holtzbrinck Medien GmbH. No sibling rivalry: he and siblings will sit on Die Zeit's supervisory board together.
