Longtime news correspondent and commentator remembered for his work with both CBS News (radio) and the National Broadcasting Company (television). He briefly anchored the Today show and often appeared on Meet the Press.
He graduated with a political science degree from the University of Wisconsin and later studied American government at Louisiana State University.
During the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, he provided NBC election year coverage of the Democratic and Republican national conventions.
He married Rigel Grell in 1944; the couple welcomed a daughter, Nancy, the following year.
In 1947, he moved to the CBS News radio division and worked under Eric Sevareid.
