About

German entrepreneur, inventor, and engineer known for patenting the method for producing sugar cubes and being the co-creator of the world's first operating example of the modern automobile engine. He and Nicolaus August Otto founded the first engine factory in the world, NA Otto & Cie. Their improvements on the gas engine won them the Grand Prize at the 1867 Paris World Exhibition.

He worked at his father's sugar factory, JJ Langen & Söhne. He studied at the Polytechnic institute in Karlsruhe.

After his first factory went bankrupt, he established a new factory, Kloeckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD), where he invented and applied new methods of production. KHD has become the current Deutz AG. He sold his patented method of producing sugar cubes in 1872 to Sir Henry Tate of England, founder of the Tate Gallery in London.

His father was Johan Jakob Langen, another German entrepreneur. He had three children, Arnold, Johan Gottlieb, and Hans Rudolf.

Karl Drais was another German inventor who influenced travel, as his Hobby Horse was a precursor to the bicycle.
