His 2004 film Head-On won the award for Best Film as well as the Audience Award at the European Film Awards.
He married Actress Monique Obermüller in 2004.
He and The Barbarian Invasions Director Denys Arcand both won the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival.
