She studied Spanish and anthropology at McGill University and wrote her first food articles for the McGill Tribune.

She was one of three children born into the Jewish-Canadian family of Ivor and Renee Simmons. She married Jeremy Abrams in 2008. They have a daughter named Dahlia Rae. In December 2017, they announced they were expecting their second child together.
