In 1960, he graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York. He subsequently became a member of the famous Actors Studio.
He received a Theatre World Award for his performance in a 1964 off-Broadway musical entitled Jerico-Jim Crow.
He was born in New York City to a family of African-American heritage. He died in Vienna, Austria at the age of forty-eight.
He was a protege of Harlem Renaissance leader Langston Hughes.
