Best known for being the president of Iceland. He was first elected in 2016 and then again in 2020. He is also a historian who specializes in modern Icelandic history, and he formerly worked as a university professor. He previously taught at the University of London and the University of Iceland. He is unaffiliated with any of Iceland's political parties and emphasizes the need for unity in a small country like Iceland.
He attended the University of Warwick, where he graduated in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in history and political science. He later earned his PhD from the University of London.
When he took office in 2016, he was Iceland's youngest president at the age of 48. He drew media attention in 2017 for joking that he would ban pineapple as a pizza topping.
He is the son of Margrét Thorlacius, a journalist, and Jóhannes Sæmundsson, a sports instructor. His brother Patrekur Jóhannesson is an Olympic athlete.
