His mother, the Countess Clara Henrietta Maria Poelzig, was unsure of his paternity, so her husband at the time, Englishman George Acland Ames, refused to acknowledge him as his son; he was, therefore, raised by a choirmaster. He married Maria Voss in 1899 and had four children.
