NASA Astronaut and U.S. Senator who was the first person to walk on the moon who never joined the U.S. armed forces. He was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1973.
He earned a PhD in geology from Harvard University in 1964 after studying at the California Institute of Technology and University of Oslo.
He was the 12th and last of the Apollo astronauts to set foot on the moon.
He married Teresa Fitzgibbon.
