Heinz-Georg Baus was born on February 25, 1934 in Germany. Heinz-Georg Baus is founder of the German home-improvement chain Bauhaus AG. A carpenter by trade, he opened his first store in a former carpentry workshop belonging to his parents in Mannheim, Germany, in 1960. He saw a niche in the trend towards do-it-yourself construction and home improvement that had already gotten underway in the U. S. Baus relocated Bauhaus headquarters to Zug, Switzerland in the late 1960s and expanded the company's reach into Austria in 1972. Today, the private, family-owned company has more than 260 stores and 23,000 employees in 19 European countries, with Germany accounting for more than half of its roughly $6 billion in annual revenue. With the acquisition of 24 stores from insolvent Praktiker (Max Bahr), Bauhaus added an estimated $700 million in annual sales. Baus is married and lives in Monaco. His only son, Bernd, serves as a managing director at the company.
