Four-star general who commanded troops during the Korean War and also served during World War II as the 13th Airborne Division's Chief of Staff. His numerous military honors include the Legion of Merit and the Silver Star.
He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1931.
After returning from Korea, he was appointed to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff for the Eighth United States Army.
He grew up in Anderson, Alabama.
He and Walton Walker were fellow U.S. Army generals.
