Isidoro Alvarez was born on 1935 in Spain. Isidoro Alvarez, chairman of department store chain El Corte Ingles, died on September 14, 2014, at age 79. Alvarez was the majority shareholder of the Madrid-based retail giant, which had annual revenues of nearly $19 billion at the time of his death. After taking over as chairman of El Corte Inglés in 1989, he built the family-owned retailer into one of Europe's largest department store chains. Under Alvarez the company expanded into supermarkets, insurance, travel and convenience stores. His uncle, Ramon Areces, founded the company in 1940 and mentored him after he began working there at age 18.
