An authority on the global economy and international trade, he taught at Yale University and published several non-fiction books and numerous articles. He is also known as the husband of cookbook author and television personality, Ina Garten.
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1968 and subsequently received his MA and PhD from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. After serving in the U.S. Army in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he served as a foreign policy and economic adviser during the administrations of Nixon, Ford and Carter.
He wrote influential articles for respected publications such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
His father, Colonel Melvin Garten, was a World War II hero. Jeffrey Garten and his wife settled in Southport, Connecticut.
