In one of the most infamous moments in National Hockey League history, after just fighting Alex Pirus of the Minnesota North Stars, skated over to the Minnesota bench and motioned with his hands, challenging the entire team but no player responded. Wensink is also well known for his large afro that he sported on the ice. He was born in Cornwall, Ontario in 1953 and grew up in Maxville, Ontario as the son of Dutch immigrants. In the fall of 1974, Wensink suited up for the CHL's Denver Spurs where he played in a mere 21 games before having to miss the remainder of the season and the following seson recovering from back surgery. Following a year and a half of inactivity, Wensink was released by the Blues and signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins in the fall of 1976.

Over the course of the next four seasons, Wensink patrolled the wing in Boston and during the 1978-79 season registered a career high 28 goals and 46 points. Following the 1982-83 season, after a brief stint with the Quebec Nordiques and the Colorado Rockies, John Wensink retired from the NHL. He played for Nijmegen Tigers in the Dutch Eredivisie in 1984–85, and in 1989 he played for the Netherlands national ice hockey team in the 1989 World Ice Hockey Championships. Currently, although retired from the game, John Wensink continues to play hockey in a Sunday night men's league at the Hardee's Iceplex in Chesterfield, MO. He and his wife, Rhonda, manage and live on a 670-acre ranch in Fredericton.
