Vogt-Roberts is directing a film based on the Metal Gear series, after reportedly starting talks with Sony Pictures in 2014. Jay Basu has been hired to write the script. In interviews, Vogt-Roberts had repeatedly expressed his passion for video games, and for the Metal Gear series in particular, and had previously met with Hideo Kojima to discuss the making of the film. In Kong: Skull Island, a boat bears the name Gray Fox after the character of the same name in Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and Metal Gear Solid. Vogt-Roberts explained how he invited potential screenplay Writers to his house to play several Metal Gear games, and noted the difficulty in keeping the game's tone for the film, as well as acknowledging the generally poor critical reception of previous film adaptations of video games.
