He studied mechanical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. He also earned a doctorate in economics from the University of Fribourg and a master's in public administration from Harvard University.

He received a number of awards, including the French Legion of Honor and the Grand Cross with Star of the National Order of Germany. He also received honorary doctorates from the London School of Economics and the National University of Singapore.

He was born to Eugen Wilhelm Schwab and Erika Epprecht in Ravensburg, Germany. He and Hilde Schwab were married in 1971. They had two children, Nicole and Olivier.

He was knighted by Elizabeth II as Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.
