First post-war Chancellor of Germany from 1949 to 1963 who forged close relations with old enemies France and the United States. He worked hard to re-establish West German's place on the world stage in the aftermath of World War II.
Using his Catholic ties, he became Vice-Mayor of Cologne in 1909.
For all of his efforts as West Germany's leader he was named Time magazine's Man of the Year in 1953.
His parents were Johann Konrad and Helene Adenauer.
He was born in Cologne, Germany's fourth-largest city, while science genius Albert Einstein was born in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, Germany.
