Polish film actor who is known for his work in silent films including the 1920 film Mrs. Temple's Telegram, 1922 film Blood and Sand, 1923 film Vanity Fair, the 1924 film Sporting Youth, and the 1925 epic Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. He had regular supporting roles in Charlie Chaplin films where he often played European villains and pompous aristocrats. He successfully transitioned from silent movies to talking films with roles in the Marx Brothers' films Monkey Business (1931) and A Night at the Opera (1935).
