South African author, poet, and literary critic best known for his works criticizing apartheid. Many of his works were censored for their criticism of the South African government.
He attended Harvard University but, after his studies, was not permitted to return to South Africa. He lived in exile in the U.S. until 2001.
He taught literature at several universities, including the University of Wisconsin and the University of California-Irvine.
He was married to Bronwen Ollerenshaw and had two daughter with her. In his later years, he was involved with Astrid Starck.
He collaborated with fellow Writer Wole Soyinka on the book Conversations With Chinua Achebe.
