During his first season with the Shenzhen club, he made nine goals over the course of 21 appearances. He also won the Chinese Super League in 2004, and was an important component in China's journey to the 2005 AFC Champions League semi-finals. After the manager of the Shenzhen club moved on to the China National Football team, Li Yi left Shenzhen and went to play for Shaanxi Chanba. He remained with Shaanxi through 2010. He played for the Chinese National team until 2007, but has not played for the team since then. He is viewed as pretentious by many Chinese soccer/football fans, and is not popular. He has been the Assistant Coach for the Shenzhen Ruby since 2011.
