British Chemist and amateur Meteorologist who contributed a nomenclature system for clouds in an 1802 proposal to the Askesian Society.
He was a Quaker and became a pharmacist for which he served an apprenticeship.
He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1821.
He married Mariabella Eliott, and they had many children.
His work with cloud classification inspired some of John Ruskin's writing.
