A Holocaust survivor and nonfiction Writer, he became known for his bestselling memoir, For Those I Loved. He published a second autobiographical work titled Life Arises Out of Darkness and a third called Au Nom de Tous les Hommes.
After emigrating from his native Poland to America at the end of World War II, he became an antiques salesman.
He wrote all of his works in French.
