Her parents met on the set of the 2005 feature film Brokeback Mountain and subsequently had a three-year-long relationship, during which she was born.
She is the goddaughter of actors Busy Philipps and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Her paternal grandparents are Sally Ramshaw Ledger and Kim Ledger, and her maternal grandparents are Carla Swenson Williams and Larry Richard Williams.
Her father died before he could update his will to include her as a beneficiary; therefore, many of her father's friends and fellow actors were worried for her well-being. Stars Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law generously donated their pay from the film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (in which Heath Ledger also appears) to a fund established for young Matilda.
