He was a star football player at the University of Pittsburgh, had a brief NFL career, and then became a schoolteacher before quitting to follow a lifelong wrestling dream.
In between WWE stints, he wrestled professionally in All Japan Pro Wrestling, and in New Japan Pro Wrestling, from 2005 to 2012.
He married Farah Louise on September 3, 2005.
Shortly after returning to WWE in 2012, he defeated John Cena in a heavily anticipated bout.
