This member of the Barbados Labour Party served from 1994 until 2008 as his country's Prime Minister. After losing the 2008 election to Democratic Labour Party candidate David Thompson, he continued his political career as the Parliamentary Leader of the Opposition.
He received bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from the University of the West Indies.
During his 2003 presidential campaign, he promised to replace British monarchial rule in Barbados with an autonomous parliamentary republic; however, his term was ultimately more focused on pressing economic issues.
Following their 2006 wedding, he and his wife Julie Price Arthur welcomed a daughter named Leah.
Arthur was the fifth Prime Minister of Barbados; Democratic Labour Party Politician Freundel Stuart was the seventh.
