He made his way to prominence and riches as the CEO and chairman of Progressive Insurance Company. Peter Benjamin Lewis (November 11, 1933 – November 23, 2013) was the oldest child of a Jewish family, Helen and Joseph Lewis. It was his father Joseph along with Jack Green that co-founded Progressive Insurance in 1937. At the time, it was a small auto insurance company. Peter was still studying at the Princeton University when he joined the company as an underwriting trainee. Rising through the ranks over the years, he became Chief Executive Officer in 1965, becoming responsible for 40 employees.

Under his helm, the company grew and by the ends of the 60s he had over 100 employees and $6m dollar in annual revenue. The secret to his success was that he brought in a lot of younger and more enthusiastic workers changing the corporate culture to a more disciplined yet creative kind. By 2010, Progressive Insurance had 27.250 employees and a net worth of $15 billion. Peter himself retired from CEO in 2000, but remained to serve as Chairman of the Board until his death in 2013.
