Tuur won a bronze medal at the 1987 Turin European Amateur Championships as a featherweight. He gained fame when he knocked out world champion American Kelcie Banks during the first round of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Tuur also defeated Kenyan John Wanjau and Great Britain's David Anderson before being defeated by Romanian Daniel Dumitrescu who won the silver medal.
