Ryoichi Jinnai was born in Japan. The third son of a farmer, Jinnai once worked at the Ministry of Agriculture before making a fortune as founder of Japanese consumer lender Promise. He retired in 2001 and retreated to the island of Hokkaido, where he had started Jinnai Farm 21. The privately held company raises cattle and sheep and grows vegetables. It also operates supermarkets and an online shop selling its products.
