Salt-n-Pepa released five studio albums, all of which achieved Gold or Platinum status. Denton, commonly referred to as "Pepa", was born in Kingston, Jamaica in November 1969. Her family moved to New York when she was a child and she studied nursing at Queensborough Community College. In school she met Cheryl "Salt" James and they recorded a single called "The Showstopper".
In 1986 Denton and James added Deidra "Spinderella" Roper to the group as their DJ. The group became known as Salt-n-Pepa and the trio released five studio albums. Salt decided to leave the music industry in 2002 but they reunited at the 2005 VH1 Hip Hop Honors awards. Pepa was cast in 2005 in the VH1 reality series The Surreal Life and returned for The Surreal Life: Fame Games. Salt-n-Pepa got back together in 2008 and have been said to be working on a new album. Pepa has been featured on Let's Talk About Pep and The Salt-N-Pepa Show. Her autobiography was released in 2008. She married a member of rap group Naughty by Nature, Treach in 1999. There were allegations that Pepa's husband physically abused her and the couple divorced in 2001.
