He began building his own go-karts using 440c snowmobile engines when he was still in middle school. He restored his sister's 1963 Volkswagon Beetle when he was twelve. He gained a reputation as a car aficionado during his school years, when he began driving a 1930 5 Window Coupe every day. He went on to attend Boise State University, where instead of going to class and studying, he spent most of his time at the local racetrack. He soon decided it was time to build his own car. He went on to work for some the best hot-rodders he could find, including George Barris, and Darryl Starbird.
