He is best known for being the former chief executive of Citigroup. He moved to the United States at 16 and attended Columbia University. He earned an M.B.A. and a PhD in finance from Columbia Business School. He taught economics at Columbia and then at Brock University in Canada. In 1983 he joined Morgan Stanley. He was promoted to managing director and head of the US Equity Syndicate. By 1994 he became the managing director. In 2000 Pandit became president and chief operating officer of worldwide operations of the Institutional securities and Investment banking businesses.
He left the firm in 2005 and in 2006 he started the hedge fund Old Lane LLC. In 2007 Citi bought the company for $800 million and he joined on as chairman and CEO of Citi Alternative Investments. Pandit became the CEO of Citigroup in December 2007.
