American gospel music singer and music promoter who founded the Oak Ridge Quartet before it became the Oak Ridge Boys.
He worked in a florist shop to support his family before beginning to sing professionally at eighteen years old with the John Daniel Quartet.
He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1997.
He married Judy Moss Fowler and they had daughters, Faith and Hope.
He was the Songwriter for Willie Nelson's song "I Couldn't Believe it was True" in 1974.
