About
English painter who is best known as a member of James Cook's second voyage to the Pacific Ocean. He is also known for the sketches and paintings of locations he visited on that voyage, including Table Bay, Easter Island, Dusky Sound and the Antarctic.
He studied painting under William Shipley and in the studio of Richard Wilson. During his early career, he made a living by painting theatrical scenery.
In December 1794, he opened an exhibition of his own works at Orme's Gallery that included two large paintings called The Effects of Peace and The Effects of War. Some of his more notable works also include sketches of Pacific Islanders and scenes from the voyages he was a part of. In 1794, je published an illustrated book about his travels in India.
In December 1785, he married Ann Mary Carr. They had two daughters and three sons together. In 1784, he married Lydia Wright and in 1776, he married Martha Bowden Nesbit, but both died within a year into their marriage.
In 1778, with the support of Warren Hastings, he traveled to India. He was one of the first British professional landscape painters to visit that country.
