Leading figure of the Awami League who took office as the 15th President of Bangladesh in April 2013.
He earned his law degree from the University of Dhaka's Central Law College.
He was the Speaker of Jatiyo Sangshad from 2009 until being elected President.
He and his wife Rashida Hamid have three sons and a daughter.
He was elected President after Zillur Rahman passed away in office.
