Prince Consort who married Queen Victoria, his first cousin, in 1840. He was instrumental in the organization of the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was actively involved in a number of progressive causes, including the abolition of slavery.
He and his brother studied under Mathematician and Astronomer Adolphe Quetelet. He later studied at the University of Bonn, where he developed an interest in music and fencing.
He was elected Chancellor of the University of Cambridge in 1847 and used his position to expand school curricula to include subjects like science and modern history.
He was the second son born to Ernest III, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. He had a total of nine children with Queen Victoria.
One of his children was Edward VII, who served as the King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions as well as the Emperor of India.
