Artist and Architect who designed civic buildings in the post-World War II reconstruction. Also known as the widely published Cartoonist, Acanthus, appearing in Punch, the Sunday Telegraph, The New Yorker, and The Builder. He was sometimes published as Hope in the Sunday Express.
He won a scholarship at age 15 to the Bartlett School of Building at University College London. His first taste of public recognition came when he won the 1930s design competition for London's Gatwick Airport's first terminal building.
He was an art Historian and an expert on Bavarian Baroque.
He married concert Pianist Rosamund Leonard in 1940, whose father was the known landowner and former President of the Chamber of Commerce of Dublin, Patrick Leonard. They had four children: Peter, Valerie, John, and Diana.
He was a distant relative of President Richard Nixon.
