Prominent New York city Lawyer and civic leader of the 40s and 50s. He was the President of the American Law Institute and the chairman of the American Bar Association.
After serving in WW I, he went into law.
He specialized in drafting wills and trust agreements, for the administering of major estates but because he was born partially deaf, he never tried a case.
His daughter married Archibald Bulloch Roosevelt, grandson of President
In 1963 President John F. Kennedy , made him the co-chairman of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a position that he held for two years.
