First African-American Conductor Emeritus of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston.
In 1966, he graduated cum laude from Harvard.
In 1979, he was awarded the first Governor's Award for the Arts of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
He had three children, Benjamin, Katharine, and Caroline, with his wife Helen Tuntland.
While assistant Conductor for the American Symphony Orchestra, he worked with Composer Leopold Stokowski.
