French cardinal of the Catholic Church who was installed as the President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue in 2007.
He received licentiates in philosophy and theology and a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
He was the Cardinal Protodeacon during the 2013 papal conclave and thus got to announce the election of Pope Francis and bestow upon him the pallium.
