Estonian Politician who was President of Estonia from 1992 to 2001. He was previously the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Ambassador of Estonia to Finland.
He graduated cum laude from the University of Tartu in 1953.
He was also a moderately successful Writer and film Director whose film The Winds of the Milky Way was banned in the Soviet Union, but won a silver medal at the New York Film Festival.
He was married twice, to Regina Meri and then to Helle Meri.
