Portuguese Politician who was the 17th President of Portugal from 1986 to 1996. He also served as Portugal's Prime Minister from 1976 to 1978 and then again from 1983 to 1985.
He joined the Portuguese Communist Party while studying at the University of Lisbon.
He ran for President again in 2006 when he was 81 years old but only received 14% of the vote.
He married Maria Barroso, and they had two children together.
