In 2013, this Dutch royal and member of the Houses of House Orange-Nassau and Amsberg ascended to his country's throne, ruling the Netherlands, as well as its constituent countries Sint Maarten, Curacao, and Aruba.
Before being crowned King of the Netherlands, he earned a master's degree in history from Leiden University and joined the Royal Netherlands Navy.
In the late 1980s, he became a volunteer pilot for the African Medical Research and Education Foundation. Also an athlete, he participated in the 1992 New York City Marathon.
The child of German-born diplomat Claus van Amsberg and Dutch Princess-turned-Queen Beatrix, he married the Argentine-born Maxima Zorreguieta Cerruti (Queen Maxima of the Netherlands) and welcomed children named Catharina-Amalia Princess of Orange, Princess Alexia, and Princess Ariane.
Queen Juliana of the Netherlands was his maternal grandmother.
